Set along the shores of Lake Erie and nestled in the northwesternmost corner of Pennsylvania, the 3,200-acre Presque Isle State Park is the setting for the Presque Isle Half Marathon, which celebrates its 34th annual running in the summer of 2013.
Run along an established course that has been used for the past several races, the 13.1-mile route takes runners on a single lap around the park, and starts and finishes at the park's beach area. The race is part of the Erie Runners Club's slate of running events throughout the year, which starts in January with the club's New Year's Day 5-mile race and finishes in December with its Snowflake 5K race.
Just over 940 runners crossed the finish line in the Presque Isle Half Marathon's summer 2012 running, which takes participants along the sandy peninsula and along paved roads through the park. Home to a wide range of endangered, rare and threated species of wildlife, Presque Isle State Park is also known as one of the country's best birding (or birdwatching destinations, as it is home to more than 300 different species of birds.
Race organizers and park officials encourage runners to arrive early for the race -- which starts at 6:30 AM -- as the parking lots can fill up with the hundreds if not thousands of visitors who come to the park each day (especially on the summer weekends).
Race Weather & Climate
Located along the coast of Lake Erie in Pennsylvania's northwestern corner, about 130 miles north of Pittsburgh and roughly 100 miles northeast of Cleveland, Ohio, Erie typically sees July temperatures that average between 64°F and 80°F, while rainfall totals average just under 3.3 inches for the month.
On the day of the race (July 21), the average low is 64°F and the average high is 81°F.
