Details
Set along the shores of Lake Erie and nestled in the northwesternmost
corner of Pennsylvania, the 3,200-acre Presque Isle State Park is the
setting for the Presque Isle Half Marathon, which celebrates its 29th
annual running in 2008. Run along an established course that has been
used for the past several races, the 13.1-mile route takes runners on a
single lap around the park, and starts and finishes at the park's beach
area.
Nearly 600 runners took part in the 2007 race, which takes participants
along the sandy peninsula and along paved roads through the park. Home
to a wide range of endangered, rare and threated species of wildlife,
Presque Isle State Park is also known as one of the country's best
birding (or birdwatching destinations, as it is home to more than 300
different species of birds.
Race organizers and park officials encourage runners to arrive early
for the race -- which starts at 7:30 AM -- as the parking lots can fill
up with the hundreds if not thousands of visitors who come to the park
each day (especially on the summer weekends).
