Pennsylvania > River Towns Marathon & Half Marathon
Danville, PA  •  Saturday, May 4, 2013  •  Course Map

One of a series of "River Towns"-themed races that take place throughout the year here in the Danville area, which lies roughly a two-and-a-half hour drive northwest from Philadelphia, the River Towns Marathon & Half Marathon marks its sixth annual running in the late spring of 2013, and takes runners on a route along the picturesque Susquehanna River between the towns of Danville and Bloomsburg, to its east.

From the starting line at Danville's F.Q. Hartman Park, located on Market Street along the riverfront, those running both the half and the full marathons follow a route that takes them northward and then eastward in the direction of Bloomsburg, past the towns of Mechanicsville, Ridgeville and Grovania, just outside Danville. Most of this stretch of the race unfolds along River Drive (Old U.S. Highway 11), and features a mixture of uphills and downhills as runners make their way eastward.

While in previous years the half marathon course was made up of what was basically the first half of the full marathon course, in 2011 the race organizers changed the half marathon from a point-to-point to an out-and-back course, so that runners will start and finish in Hartman Park in Danville. In between, they'll make a few turns through town early in the race, and then follow a long, straightaway out-and-back stretch along River Road, which winds along the river and takes them out to the turnaround point, just past County Line Drive.

The race remains open to half marathon teams, as in the past -- for those team members running the second half of the half marathon, they'll be carried to their starting line by shuttle bus from the race starting line area. More than 500 runners crossed the finish line in both the full marathon and half marathon combined in 2012, including just over 400 runners in the half marathon alone.
