Pennsylvania > Yough River Trail Council Half Marathon & 5K
Connellsville, PA

Date

Saturday, April 12, 2008

Event Details

Along this onetime railroad that ferried train passengers in days long past along the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad in southwestern Pennsylvania, the Yough River Trail Council Half Marathon now unfolds along the 43-mile trail of the same name, now in use as a multi-purpose recreational trail for biking, running, walking, fishing and canoeing.

Part of a planned larger recreational trail called the Great Allegheny Passage, the Yough River Trail welcomed more than 150 runners and walkers for the 2007 running of the event.

Though it is a smaller, more intimate running event, the race stands out for its abundant rural, open-spaces scenery along a mixed-surface course made up of both paved and gravel trails, which runs in parallel to the Youghiogheny River. The out-and-back course includes a few rolling hills but no steep uphills or downhills, though it does take runners across a few wooden bridges along some brief parts of the trail. The starting time for both the half-marathon and the 5K run/walk is 10:00 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

Though the month of April typically brings warming weather to this small town (population 9,146) in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania, participants in the 2006 race reported that “cold, nasty weather” was the rule for the day of the race. Temperatures in April average between 36°F and 63°F, while precipitation averages about 3.73 inches for the month.
