Details
The height of the summer season brings the first of the Spearfish
Canyon area's two half-marathon events, the Spearfish Canyon Half
Marathon & 5K Run/Walk, organized and run to benefit the
Northern Hills CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children)
organization, a local nonprofit that raises funds for abused and
neglected children in need of legal protection and advocacy.
The 2007 running of the half marathon (its 21st annual) saw 155 runners
cross the finish line and about 96 finishers for the 5K race, both
which start and finish in Spearfish City Park, and take runners on a
course through the tree-lined canyon area filled with gorgeous views of
the canyon walls and limestone formations. The out-and-back course for
the half marathon is an "uphill-downhill" race, with the first 6.5
miles of the course run uphill and the second half run downhill (both
halves of the race are run over the same stretch of the Spearfish
Canyon Scenic Byway).
Runners who are also film buffs might recognize some of the scenery
along the course: portions of the 1990 Kevin Costner film "Dances With
Wolves" were filmed in the Northern Hills area along Spearfish Creek,
which skirts the Scenic Byway (Highway 14) along the race course.

Weather & Climate
Mid-summer weather conditions in the Spearfish, S.D., area tend to be
pleasantly mild to warm, as July temperatures average between
85°F and 58°F. Rainfall is relatively scarce, as the
town sees an average of about 2.2 inches of precipitation on average
during the month.
