Nestled along a bend in the winding Cumberland River that stretches all the way from the park in northwestern Tennessee known as the Land Between The Lakes Recreation Area and Nashville to the southeast, the city of Clarksville plays host in the fall of 2011 to the third annual running of the Clarksville Half Marathon, 5K Run/Walk and one-mile fun run.
Part of a series of half marathon races staged across the country by the USRA Half Marathon Series -- which also includes races in
St. Charles, Md.;
Bentonville, Ark.; and
Lexington, Ky., among several other cities -- the Clarksville Half follows a scenic course filled with rolling hills along rural country roads in the farmland areas just to the west of downtown Clarksville, which is home to more than 100,000 residents and has been named one of the state's up-and-coming places to live, as it lies within an hour's drive of nearby Nashville.
Organizers plan to have live bands playing throughout the out-and-back loop course for the race, which starts and finishes at the Beachaven Winery, just off Interstate 24. From there, runners follow a clockwise loop route, heading out along Dunlop Lane to the turn onto Charles Bell Road and then onto Hampton Station Road.
At about the mid-way point between the 4th and 5th mile markers, runners turn onto Kirkwood Road and follow it as it bends through several turns until meeting up with Roseview Road, which they follow all the way west toward the intersection with International Boulevard. There, the course turns north and takes runners along the last two miles into the finish line back at the winery.
Walkers are welcome in the half marathon as well as the 5K, provided they can complete the race's 13.1 miles within the four-hour time limit.
