Event Details

More than 1,100 runners crossed the finish line -- with just over 880 of those in the half-marathon alone -- at the spring 2009 running of the Memphis area's annual Germantown Half Marathon & Mayor's Cup 5K, a road race that takes runners along an out-and-back loop course through the rolling hills and past the parks of this Tennessee community in a festive tie-in with the St. Patrick's Day holiday. Both races start and finish at the Germantown Athletic Club & Germantown Performing Arts Centre on Exeter Road, and are open to both runners and walkers.

From the starting line at the performing arts centre and athletic club, runners follow what is roughly a clockwise route around the course, first along Neshoba Road and then along Brierbrook Road, Farmingdale Road and Kimbrook Road, before turning onto West Farmingbrook Boulevard for a long straightaway section that takes runners past Germantown Country Club and Cameron Brown Park. Runners take a brief detour inside Cameron Brown and then continue along the roadway until it becomes Farmington Road extension and then Wolf River Boulevard, which the field will take until the turn over to Houston Levee Park.

Runners (and walkers) will follow the course all the way through Houston Levee, around the water and back onto Dogwood Road, following this street for the next mile or so until the intersection with Forest Hill Irene Road. There, runners turn left and head south along Forest Hill Irene, turning right again on Dogwood for a lengthy stretch that takes them all the way to the intersection with Kimbrogh Road, where runners turn and head north toward the first couple of miles of the course, and retrace their steps all the way back to the finish line at the Performing Arts Centre.

Race Weather & Climate

A suburb of the Memphis metro area, Germantown can still see quite cold weather in the last days before spring, as March temperatures average between 40°F and 62°F. Rainfall is a possibility, as the city sees an average of over 5 inches of precipitation during the month, making March one of its wettest months.
