Tennessee > Upper Cumberland Haunted Half Marathon
Cookeville, TN • Saturday, October 20, 2012 • Course Map

Set for its fourth annual running in late October 2012 here among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Tennessee, this Halloween-themed race takes runners on an out-and-back loop course through the small city of Cookeville, where runners and walkers will start the race on the campus of Tennessee Tech University.
The race is the third and final event of the year in a three-race series known as the "Run the Cumberlands" series, which starts in August with the Race for the Park 8K and proceeds to September's Fall Fun Fest 5K & 10K, and finishes with the Upper Cumberland Haunted Half on the weekend before Halloween in October.
From the starting line near the intersection of North Dixie Avenue and B Street on the Tennessee Tech campus -- the scheduled starting time for the race is 7:00 AM -- runners head south on what is basically a counter-clockwise loop through the city's downtown and out into some of the more rural areas just outside town. Runners make their way through mostly city streets and retail shops in the first couple of miles, and then head into more residential neighborhoods in the later miles.
The hilliest portion of the race occurs between the 2nd and 3rd mile markers, as runners are heading south along South Maple Avenue -- the race's steepest downhill stretch is followed almost immediately by its steepest uphill stretch as runners near mile 3. Once they make their way past the mile 3 marker, however, the course largely flattens out again and remains so for most of the rest of the race, with only gently rolling hills for the remainder of the miles.
As mentioned above, the Haunted Half is open to both runners and walkers, provided they can reach the finish line within four hours -- which means they'll need to maintain a pace of 18 minutes per mile or better. Runners who don't want to cover all 13.1 miles of the race by themselves should know the race also features a three-person relay event. The first leg of the race is 3.5 miles, followed by the second leg (5.9 miles) and the third leg, which is 3.7 miles.
The course for the half marathon is USATF (USA Track & Field) certified, and entrants must be at least 14 years of age on the day of the race in order to participate.
