Event Details

Run through the city streets and urban parks of the western half of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, Fort Worth's "The Cowtown" road races are a veritable six-ring circus of running events, including a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K races for both kids and adults. The race even includes a 31.068-mile ultramarathon, which adds nearly an extra five miles through the city's Trinity and Heritage Parks as well as a stretch along the west fork of the Trinity River before finishing up with the rest of the field at the Main Street finish line.

The course for the half starts just a block away from the finish line, starting runners off at the corner of West 4th and Houston Streets on a route that follows a straightaway northward along Main Street for the first couple of miles. Relatively flat for these first two miles, the course then starts hitting its first hills just as runners reach the mile 2 marker and make the turn left onto 20th and then 16th Streets, passing by Marine Park on the way to Circle Park Boulevard. Turning left again on Circle Park, the course crests at the mile 3 marker and then takes a sharp downward hill onto West Northside Drive.

It's mostly downhill as West Northside curves to the left and becomes University Drive, taking runners past the edge of Rockwood Park and the Rockwood Golf Course. Runners then pass by Greenwood Cemetery along University and turn onto White Settlement Road, which they follow for the next mile until the turn onto Rivercrest Drive for a block and then onto Monticello at the mile 6 marker, which starts the hilliest portion of the race for the half-marathoners.

Miles 6, 7 and 8 take participants on a climb of roughly 200 feet in elevation, passing by the Rivercrest Country Club along Clark Avenue, Hillcrest Street and Crestline Road, toward the split where those running the full marathon continue down Pentecost Street on their way toward the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens. Those running in the half turn onto Harley and then Hulen Street, toward the long straightaway along Camp Bowie Boulevard.

The last few miles of the race follow a long downhill stretch, punctuated by a few small hills here and there, taking runners along Camp Bowie and then 7th Street toward the Fort Worth Convention Center. The finishing stretch features a few last hills on the way through General Worth Square to the finish line on Main Street.

This year's race drew a large crowd of spectators throughout the course, according to participants who ran the race, and around 10,000 finishers in all six races combined. The half marathon, like the full marathon, ultramarathon and the 10K, starts at 7:30 AM, followed by the adult 5K at 8:15 AM and the kids' 5K at 9:00 AM.
