Texas > Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Half Marathon
Sugar Land, TX • Sunday, March 25, 2012 • Course Map
Set for its second annual running in the spring of 2012 here in this southeastern Texas city, which lies just 20 miles from downtown Houston, the first annual Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Half Marathon takes runners on an out-and-back loop course that starts and finishes at the Sugar Land Town Square planned community.
Developed in 1996 as a "downtown" for this city that has been named one of the best places to live in the United States by both Money Magazine and CNN, and got its start as a company town for the sugar industry decades ago, the Sugar Land Town Square today is a gleaming mixture of hotels, retail shopping, restaurants and offices, and serves as the starting and finish line area for the race.
Runners will start the race just a block from the Sugar Land Town Square Marriott hotel, and follow the route as it heads southward out toward Palm Royale Boulevard all the way down to Sweetwater Country Club in Sweetwater Estates, where runners and walkers -- the race is open to both -- will run among the residential neighborhoods along Palm Royale Boulevard. After runners hit the half-way point, they then make their way back toward the Sugar Land Town Square for the race finish.
In part because runners and walkers will share the course with traffic for the duration of the race -- participants will run or walk in one lane, while auto traffic will occupy the other lane along the course -- the race organizers at Sugar Land's Finish Line Sports strongly discourage the use of iPods or headphones for other music mp3 devices while runners are out on the course, to ensure that they're always aware of their surroundings.
The scheduled starting time for the race is 6:45 AM local time (Central time) and runners must be able to finish the race's 13.1 miles within 3 hours, 45 minutes. The race also will be limited to 1,500 entrants for 2012.
