Details
One of the state's most popular half-marathon races, the Houston Half
Marathon & Relay saw more than 2,400 runners cross the finish
line in both the individual race and the relay in 2007. Run along a
tight loop course in the shadow of Houston's downtown skyscrapers, the
race starts and finishes on the edge of Sam Houston Park and features
long stretches along the Buffalo Bayou, the main waterway that flows
through the center of the city.
In contrast with many other road races that follow sprawling,
circuitous routes through their home cities, this race's loop course is
run within a fairly confined area, and runners complete three loops
before reaching the finish line back at the park. All but roughly a
half-mile stretch of the race is run along two main downtown streets,
Allen Parkway, the outward leg of the first loop along the water, and
West Dallas Street, which brings runners back toward the park for the
start of the second loop. Both the second and third loops take runners
along the Allen Parkway only.
Runners encounter few hills along this mostly fast and flat course,
though there are a few gradual uphill and downhill stretches. All of
the race is run over paved surfaces, and there is a three-hour time
limit for those running in the individual and the relay. The race
also is open to wheelchair competitors, who will start the race at 6:50
AM in advance of the
runners' starting time at 7:00 AM.
