The crest of the Fred Hartman Bridge overlooking the waters of Tabbs Bay and Black Duck Bay, just miles from nearby Houston, marks the climactic half-way point of the Jailbreak Half Marathon, which is set for its second annual running in the late winter season of 2012 here in this Texas Gulf coast city that lies just to the east of its much larger neighbor.
Designed as a fundraiser for two local nonprofits -- the Baytown Municipal Police Officers Association and the Marcus Lee Zaruba Criminal Justice Foundation Scholarship -- the race is set to follow an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at the offices of the Baytown Police Department, which lies along the city's Main Street.
From there, runners head out southward along Main Street for the race's first couple of miles, until they reach the first turn onto Texas Avenue. Here runners turn right and head northwest toward Market Street, where they'll turn left and start the stretch of the race that brings them around to the Fred Hartman Bridge, the 1,250-ft. cable-stayed bridge that straddles the Houston Ship Channel and connects Baytown with nearby LaPorte.
Once they make their way onto the bridge, runners head up along the rising incline of the bridge to its highest point overlooking the bay. There, they'll make the turn and then head back downhill toward Baytown, turning back onto Main Street and Lee Drive before meeting up with Texas Avenue, and then re-tracing their steps in the opposite direction back up to the police department headquarters for the race finish.
The race is open to both runners and walkers -- there will be a 6:30 AM starting time for those walking the course, followed by the 7:00 AM starting time for the runners. The race time limit is four hours, so the race course will close at 11:00 AM and re-open to traffic.
