Details
One of a number of local running events that feature Dallas's
beautifully scenic White Rock Lake Park, the North Trail Half Marathon
is one of the city's smaller road race events but also one of its most
engaging, as it takes the few hundred runners who participate in the
race each year on an out-and-back course along the trail that follows
White Rock Creek, on a northward path out from the park up to the
Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway and back.
More than 400 runners crossed the finish line last year at the race,
which starts and finishes at the northern end of White Rock Lake at the
spot called Flagpole Hill, inside the Norbuck Park section of the park.
Runners take off from the starting line at 7:00 AM and head north along
Goforth Road and then west on West Lawther Drive before turning off
onto the paved trail that runs alongside the creek. The course follows
the creek all the way up to the LBJ Freeway, crossing Kingsley Road,
Church Road and Royal Lane on its way to the turnaround point at the
intersection with the highway.
After reaching the turnaround, runners then begin their trek back to
the finish line, crossing back over the course they've just run on the
way to the finish line back at Flagpole Hill. Really nowhere on the
course, organizers add, are there any hills to speak of – the
North Trail race is flat and fast for the entire race, and run on
paved-surface trails and city roads.
Both competitive and casual
runners are encouraged to participate in the race, which is organized
and run by Thruston Racing, a Dallas-based operator of 5K, duathlon,
marathon and half-marathon events in the local area throughout the
year.

Participants will need to arrive prepared for a variety of weather
conditions at the North Trail Half Marathon, as late spring weather in
the Dallas area can be highly variable -- temperatures can be very warm

May, the area's average monthly temperatures range between 84°F
and
66°F, while rainfall amounts average around 5.3 inches for the
month -- the highest rainfall total of the year, on average.
