Texas > PrairieMan Half Marathon & 5K
Grand Prairie, TX • Saturday, September 8, 2013 • Course Map
Set for its 3rd annual running in early September 2013 as summer is giving way to fall here in this suburb of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, Grand Prairie's PrairieMan Half Marathon takes runners on an out-and-back course that starts and finishes along the shores of Joe Pool Lake in Lynn Creek Park, which lies about 10 miles south of the city.
The race -- which also features a 5K run/walk as well as a one-mile run/walk -- is designed as a benefit for the MP Foundation for ALS Awareness, which provides support for those living and coping with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. (For more information about the MP Foundations for ALS Awareness, visit their organization's website.)
Runners start the race in the parking area near the boat ramps along the northeast shore of Joe Pool Lake inside Lynn Creek Park, a 785-acre park south of Grand Prairie. From there, the race takes runners first around a pair of loops along the lake's shoreline and then out of the park to the intersection with Mansfield Road, where runners will make a right and then follow a long straightaway stretch along the northern shoreline of the lake, all the way to the Joe Pool Lake Dam.
At the dam -- which also coincides with the half-way point of the 13.1-mile course -- runners will then make the turnaround and head back westward toward Lynn Creek Park, where they'll follow the same route they ran earlier in reverse, all the way back to the parking lot area for the race finish. Described by the race organizers as very flat and fast -- with the exception of some hills at the half-way turnaround point -- and run on paved surfaces throughout, the course is the same one used at the PrairieMan triathlon events earlier in the month.
