Event Details

Featuring both a guest ranch and a working cattle ranch that sit on hundreds of acres just outside Fort Davis in west Texas, the Historic Prude Ranch opens up its wide-open spaces every year for the Prude Ranch Races, a series of running events that includes a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and both an individual and relay duathlon. The half marathon race in the event is hilly and challenging, and takes runners on an out-and-back course to the Mount Locke Observatory, which overlooks Prude Ranch from the nearby Davis Mountains.

The race is a small running event -- fewer than 100 runners crossed the finish line in 2007 in all three races combined -- and is run in part to mark the start of the ranch's annual Davis Mountains Fitness & Training Camp, a week-long fitness camp for adults who want to get more active and start new fitness regimens in sports ranging from running, hiking, cycling and swimming to mind-body exercises like yoga, Pilates and meditation.

From the starting line at the gate to the ranch on Texas Highway 118, the half marathon race takes runners along the roads and mountain trails within the ranch and out toward the observatory and back. Thanks to Fort Davis's nearly mile-high elevation (5,050 feet above sea level), the race usually enjoys relatively cool temperatures in what is normally a month that brings very hot temperatures across the rest of the state.

Along the course, runners get to take in the stark beauty of this remote west Texas town and the Davis Mountains State Park, where the Prude Ranch has been in operation as a working cattle ranch for more than 100 years. The starting time for all of the races in the event is 7:30 AM, and the awards ceremony begins around approximately 10:00 AM.

In August, average monthly temperatures range between 87°F and 59°F, while rainfall amounts average about 2.97 inches for the month -- the highest monthly total of the year on average.
