Details
The fall of 2008 will bring the first-ever running of San Antonio's
Rock & Roll Marathon & Half Marathon, which will
feature -- much like its counterparts in San Diego and Virginia Beach
-- live bands to cheer the runners, walkers and wheelchair competitors
on every two miles along the entire 26.2-mile course, of which the
first 13.1 miles is the course the half-marathoners will run. Designed
to be a fast and flat course -- and to take runners in a
southward direction away from the hilly northern sections of the city
-- the race takes runners by many of San Antonio's most popular
sights.
For those running in both the half and the full marathons, the race
begins on the eastern edge of Brackenridge Park, a 340-acre urban park
that's home to a golf course, paved biking and walking paths and the
San Antonio Zoo. Runners follow Broadway Street south for nearly the
first two miles of the race, passing under Interstate 35 and by the
small city park named Maverick Park. At the first turn of the course,
left onto 4th Street and then right after a few blocks onto Bonham
Street, the field comes upon the first of the city's many historic
sights -- the Alamo, around which they get to run nearly the entire
way as they turn again onto Alamo Plaza.
The course takes a few twists and turns through this part of the city,
turning again on North Alamo Street, 3rd Street, East Martin and
Navarro Street before heading northeast on North St. Mary's Street,
which takes the field -- which organizers expect to number 20,000
runners, walkers and wheelchair participants or more -- up toward the
campus of San Antonio College and San Pedro Park. By the time they
reach the western edge of San Pedro Park on North Forbes Street,
participants will be hitting about the 6.5-mile point in the race.
After completing the stretch of the course around the park, runners
turn onto San Pedro Avenue and Cypress Street, passing by Crockett
Park, and then onto North Main Street for a long straightaway stretch
for the next couple of miles. At the mile 9 marker at the end of this
stretch of the course, runners will turn onto East Guenther and then
King William Street, which follows the course northward up to Judge
Garcia Memorial Boulevard and then onto South St. Mary's Street,
through the Southtown Arts District. The
roughly half-mile-long stretch along St. Mary's Street ends at Claudia
Street, where those competing in the full marathon will split off from
those running the half and continue on for their second 13.1 miles.
The half-marathoners are almost home, however, and have only three
miles more to go to the finish. After the turn on
Claudia, the course takes a turn immediately northward on South Presa
Street and then back onto Garcia Memorial Boulevard, passing by
Hemisfair Park on the left. Runners continue on for the next mile also
along this road, turning on South Bowie Street and then East Market
Street, for the final stretch toward the finish line at the Alamodome.
While the "Rock & Roll" theme is new for San Antonio, marathon
running certainly isn't. This race replaces the San Antonio Marathon of
the Americas and Half Marathon, which dates back to the 1970s and 80s,
and saw its final running in the fall of 2007.

Weather & Climate
Known for its very hot summers and rainy spring and early summer
seasons, San Antonio in the fall generally enjoys much milder and drier
weather by comparison. In November, the city's average monthly
temperatures range between 71°F and 49°F, while
rainfall amounts average about 2.58 inches for the month.
