Texas > Rock & Roll San Antonio Marathon & Half Marathon
San Antonio, TX  •  Sunday, November 11, 2012  •  Course Map  •  Series Calendar

The fall of 2012 brings the fifth annual running of San Antonio's Rock & Roll Marathon & Half Marathon, which features -- much like its counterparts in San Diego and Virginia Beach -- live bands to cheer the runners, walkers and wheelchair competitors on every two miles along the entire 26.2-mile course, of which the first 13.1 miles is the course the half-marathoners run.

Designed to be a fast and flat course -- and to take runners in a southward direction away from the hilly northern sections of the city -- the race takes runners by many of San Antonio's most popular sights. More than 24,000 runners, walkers and relay team participants crossed the finish line at the race's 2011 running, including just over 19,000 runners in the half marathon alone.

The race begins near the city's Henry Gonzalez Convention Center, along Market Street, and then the course passes by the Tower of the Americas on the way to the St. Pauls Square area. The course takes a few twists and turns through this part of the city, turning again on North Alamo Street, 3rd Street, East Martin and Navarro Street before heading northeast on North St. Mary's Street, which takes the field -- which organizers expect to number over 20,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair participants or more -- up toward the campus of San Antonio College and San Pedro Park.

After completing the stretch of the course around the park, runners turn onto San Pedro Avenue and Cypress Street, passing by Crockett Park, and then onto North Main Street for a long straightaway stretch for the next couple of miles. At the mile 9 marker at the end of this stretch of the course, runners will turn onto East Guenther and then King William Street, which follows the course northward up to Judge Garcia Memorial Boulevard and then onto South St. Mary's Street, through the Southtown Arts District.

The half-marathoners are almost home, however, and have only three miles more to go to the finish. After the turn on Lotus, the course takes a turn immediately northward on South Presa Street and then back onto Durango Boulevard, passing by Hemisfair Park on the left. Runners continue on for the next mile also along this road, turning on Market Street and South Cherry Street, for the final stretch toward the finish line at the Alamodome.

In addition to the full marathon and half marathon for individual runners, the race also hosts a two-person relay for the half marathon, for men's, women's and coed teams. Participants will have four hours to complete the half marathon (and 7 hours to finish the full marathon), based on their personal chip time -- not the starting gun time for the overall race.

Race Weather & Climate

Known for its very hot summers and rainy spring and early summer seasons, San Antonio in the fall generally enjoys much milder and drier weather by comparison. In November, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 72°F and 50°F, while rainfall amounts average just under 2.3 inches for the month. On the day of the race (Nov. 11), the average high is 74°F and the average low is 52°F.
