Event Details

Part of a series of running, triathlon and swimming events that will include races in Oregon, California and Texas throughout the year, the Run American Run race will host its inaugural Run Austin Run Half Marathon, 5K & 10K race in the fall of 2009, along a course that winds its way through the neighborhoods surrounding Austin's Camp Mabry Military Reservation and near the campus of the University of Texas.

The out-and-back course for the half marathon will start and finish in Austin's Triangle State neighborhood, near both the University's intramural athletic fields and the Austin State Hospital. From there, runners will follow a loop that winds in a counter-clockwise direction through this section of the city, running along Hancock Drive and then Crestview Drive, which brings runners to the section of the race that takes them along the winding Colorado River, which flows through the heart of the city.

The course keeps taking runners around past the river and then turns left onto Austin's Enfield Road, for a stretch that runs past the green, tree-lined fairways of the city's Lions Municipal Golf Course and then crosses through Westenfield Park and the Johnson Creek Greenbelt Park. After crossing through the parks, the course turns left again on Hartford Road and begins the last few miles of the race, which unfold along Jefferson and Bull Creek Streets and then the home stretch on West 45th, to the finish back at the Triangle State area.

Organizers will start participants off in waves beginning at 7:00 AM, and runners will need to be able to keep at least a 15-minute-per-mile pace for the race's first eight miles, as roads will need to be re-opened to traffic as runners complete the early sections of the race.

Race Weather & Climate

Like much of the southern Texas region, the city of Austin typically experiences very hot summers followed by thankfully milder fall seasons, as well as its heaviest precipitation in the late spring and early fall. In October, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 81°F and 60°F, while rainfall totals average nearly 4 inches for the month.
