One of the amazing things about running races is that, whatever your interest or passion, there's really an almost infinite varieties of terrains, conditions and climates in which you can run. Want to run a race through a backwoods forest? You can do it in Florida. Along the beach? You can do it in Jacksonville. Along the ice at the south pole? You can do it in Antarctica.
And if you want to run a race in the middle of summer in one of the hottest climates anywhere in the United States, you can do that too -- at the aptly named Sizzling Summer Half Marathon, 10K and 1-Mile "Fun Run" in Arlington, Texas, which lies roughly at the half-way point between the DFW Metroplex cities of Dallas and Fort Worth.
The race is set to take runners on an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at Arlington's River Legacy Park, which lies along Green Oaks Boulevard in northern central part of the city, just a few miles from the Rangers Ballpark, the home of Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers, and the new Cowboys Stadium, the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and of the 2011 Super Bowl.
Though the area lies just a short drive from miles of asphault and concrete highways, the race will actually take runners entirely through the trails of River Legacy Park, whose more than 1,300 acres lie right along the Trinity River and are home to a nature preserve with both wetlands and prairie lands, as well as the River Legacy Living Science Center, which features nature exhibits, aquariums, environmental education programs and nature trails that blend in with the park.
The terrain is largely flat and fast along the park trails, and runners should come prepared for both heat and sun -- sunglasses and sunscreen will be a must, as well as drinking plenty of water. Arlington regularly reaches the 90s in July, and flirts often with triple-digit temperatures in the summer -- the record high for July 23 is 105°F, so stay safe!
