Details
The Great Salt Lake Half Marathon offers the chance to run across the
second saltiest body of water in the world and the largest U.S. lake
west of the Mississippi River -- Utah's Great Salt Lake. The race is
run
along a USATF-certified, point-to-point course that is mostly flat,
with a few short inclines in the last two miles. However, for those
from out-of-town, the thin air can be a factor as the course elevation
hovers around 4,500 ft.
Starting at 6:30 a.m. in Clearfield City (located about 20 miles
outside of Salt Lake City), the race heads toward the Great Salt Lake
and takes runners over a 7-mile paved causeway to the white sandy
beaches of Antelope Island, the largest of the Great Salt Lake's 10
islands and a popular recreation destination offering a sailboat
marina, hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, picnicking and
camping areas.
Keep an eye out for the wildlife - bison, antelope,
deer, bobcats, coyotes, and elk roam freely on the island and are often
seen by visitors. Bus transportation back to the start is provided.
With a small field – 127 finishers in 2006 – the
Great Salt Lake Half is a great race to go for an award. $1,300 will be
given out in cash awards to the top three overall male and female
finishers, plus top three finishers in each age category will receive
ribbons. The overall winning times in 2006 were 1:09:58 and 1:22:23 for
men and women, respectively.
