Utah > Gunnison Valley Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Saturday, April 24, 2010
Framed by mountains all around -- where, off in the distance, visitors can explore any of the state's several national parks within a few hours' drive -- and the river that flows through parts of the city, the Gunnison Valley Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K races take runners on tour of this central Utah city's gorgeous natural beauty and the small-town charms of this city of just over 2,000 residents in the area known as Utah's Gunnison Valley.
This race fields a relatively small number of runners each year -- for its spring 2010 race, the event's fifth annual running, organizers expected a field of roughly 150 runners for all four races -- and features a point-to-point 13.1-mile course for the half marathon that starts just to the east of town near the Nine Mile Reservoir, and finishes in the city's downtown area, at the intersection of Main Street and 300 N Street.
Along the half marathon route, runners will run through the nearby communities of Mayfield and Chesterfield, and can expect to encounter some rolling hills in the race's first couple of miles. After the race's first four miles, which take runners from the reservoir and head directly south along State Street toward Mayfield, the course then turns onto May Field Road and heads west toward Gunnison, and begins a long, gradual descent over roughly the next five miles.
Once runners reach the eastern edges of the city, after making their way through mostly farmland and hills, they then begin the stretch of the race that takes them along Gunnison's Riverwalk area. This stretch lasts for roughly a mile and a half along the riverbank, which may have what race organizers describe as "a couple inches of water" to slog their way through, as the river often experiences springtime overflows that wash up onto the riverbanks.
After making their way along the river, runners rejoin the roadways on 200 W Street and then make their way north for a little over half a mile before turning right onto 300 N Street, and then it's less than half a mile left to cross the finish line on Main Street.
Weather & Climate
Located in central Utah, roughly 125 miles south of Salt Lake City down Interstate 15, the city of Gunnison typically experiences mild to cool and occasionally still quite cold weather conditions during the month the race is held, and usually sees even (and relatively low) precipitation year-round. In April, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 65°F and 31°F, while precipitation totals average just under an inch for the month.
