Event Details

Set for its inaugural running in the fall of 2010, the Layton Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K races will take runners along a course through this northern Utah city's mostly flat city streets, which lie in the shadow of the majestic Wasatch Mountains just to the east of town. While the full marathon will take runners on a point-to-point course that starts on Antelope Island State Park in the middle of Great Salt Lake and finishes in Layton, the half will follow an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at the marathon finish line, at Layton's Ellison Park.

Those running the half start at the park, on North 2200 West, and follow the course as it winds first southward toward Gentiel Street, and then turns right (and west) onto Gentile for the next few miles. From the starting line, runners follow what is mostly a long, gradual downhill along miles 1 through 4, and then follow mostly flat terrain for the next four miles or so, through the turnaround point on South 4000 West and then back toward the finish line.

After runners make their way past the mile 9 marker, the race course then starts a long, gradual uphill back up to the finish in Ellison Park, rising from a low point of roughly 4,220 feet above sea level to a peak of just under 4,350 feet above sea level as runners are finishing the race.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in northern Utah overlooking the Great Salt Lake's Farmington Bay, just over 20 miles north of Salt Lake City, the city of Layton typically experiences mild to cool and occasionally cold weather in the early fall season, with generally wetter weather in the fall than in the summer, when little rain usually falls. On the day of the race (Oct. 9), the city's average high temperature is 70°F and its average low is 40°F, while rainfall amounts average just over 2.1 inches for the month.
