Event Details

The only running event in which you get to run through the Little Grand Canyon in Eastern Utah and see some of the world’s most pristine scenery in the world, this marathon & half marathon event will take you through Utah's majestic towering red rocks, which tell the geological timetable as you run through the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous eras. There are actual dinosaur footprints on the side of the road and you run in front of one of the largest Native American Pictograph Panels in the State, also known as the Buckhorn Panel.

Due to its exclusive location and the multiple paleontological and archeological vistas (and the fact that the San Rafael Swell is considered one of the world's great hidden treasures), this is the only run of its kind -- and it's most definitely for the runner that enjoys the tranquility and beauty of running in the outback.

Primarily a flat and downhill half-marathon with only gently rolling hills, the race starts at an elevation of 5,650 feet above sea level and descends to an elevation of 5,100 feet, so it will not put unnecessary strain on the joints. There is only one access road through the canyon, but it is fairly compacted so there will be little if any loose gravel on the road.

The packet pickup will be Friday night at the the Prehistoric Museum at the College of Eastern Utah in Price (a two-hour drive from Salt Lake City; 2 1/2 hours from Grand Junction, Colo.). To get participants to the starting line about 20 to 30 minutes from the town of Price, a bus will depart from this same location at 6:40 AM the next morning. Fruit and drinks will be provided immediately after the race and the bus will take us back to the Museum for an authentic luau and activities after the race (free for runners).

Race Weather & Climate

The middle of September is excellent for the marathon and half marathon. The marathon starts at 6:30 AM and the half marathon starts at 7:15 AM. The average high temperature can range from the high sixties to low seventies Fahrenheit. With over 150 clear days during the summer, there is a good chance for optimal race weather.
