Utah > Suncrest Mountain Race Half Marathon, 5K & 3K Fun Run
Draper, UT

Date

Saturday, September 12, 2009

Event Details

Take a run along roads and trails with stunning views of the nearby Wasatch Mountains and the valley below leading into Salt Lake City at the second annual running of Draper's Suncrest Mountain Race, which will feature the first running of its 13.1-mile half marathon race in addition to a 5K and 3K "fun run" for runners and walkers. Last year's race featured a 10-mile run in addition to the 5K and 3K; in 2009, the 10-mile race will be replaced by the half marathon distance.

All three races in the event start at Village Green Park at the top of Traverse Ridge Road, which winds up the mountains south of Draper to the Suncrest area. From there, runners will follow a winding course around the Suncrest residential area, along both paved neighborhood streets and the trails through the mountains just south of Village Green Park. Nearly 130 runners crossed the finish line in the event's 10-mile and 5K races in 2008, and even more are expected in 2009 thanks to the addition of the new half-marathon distance.

Runners need to be prepared for a high-elevation run, as the starting line lies at an elevation of about 6,200 feet above sea level; the 2008 race's 10-mile run featured an overall elevation change of about 1,500 feet, so runners also need to be ready for some challenging uphill and downhills stretches, especially along the mountain trail sections of the race course. Those running the half in 2009 will start their race at 8:00 AM, followed by the 5K and 3K runners and walkers at 9:00 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the edges of Utah's Wasatch mountains, about 20 miles south of downtown Salt Lake City, the city of Draper typically experiences warm to occasionally mild weather conditions in the late summer/early fall, as the area's hot July and August temperatures give way to usually cooler weather around the time of the race. In September, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 83°F and 51°F, while rainfall totals average just over an inch for the month.

Fees

$25 for the half marathon, if registered by September 3, 2009
