Utah > Zion Half Marathon
Virgin, UT  •  Saturday, March 22, 2014  •  Course Map

Runners get the chance to follow a route with awe-inspiring scenery through southwestern Utah's canyon country at the Zion Half Marathon, which makes its 2nd annual running along a point-to-point route between the tiny towns of Virgin and Springdale, just outside St. George, on the first official weekend of spring in 2014.

The race is set to start just off Highway 9 in Virgin, a town of just a few hundred residents, on Camino Del Rio. From there, runners then turn right and head onto Highway 9 -- Zion Park Road -- which takes them in the direction of Zion National Park, whose mesas, mountains, waterfalls, streams, canyons, caves and red rock formations of nearly every size offer some of the country's most stunning vistas and views, both from high above the rocks and down below in the canyons.

From the race starting line in Virgin, runners head east along Highway 9 towards Springdale, making an overall very gradual uphill ascent over the course of the race by the time they reach the finish line in Springdale, at the Giant Screen Theatre near the entrance to Zion National Park. The course climbs some 400 feet in elevation over the course of the race, and the biggest hills come in the first couple of miles, again between miles 3 and 4, and then again just after the half-way point.

The race is open to both individual runners and teams of up to 5 runners each, and organizers plan to limit the number of entrants to a total of 1,500. The scheduled starting time for the race is 7:00 AM, and runners will have 3 hours to finish the race, which is open to both runners and walkers -- provided they can finish within 3 hours.
