Details
More than 300 runners took part in the 2007 running of the Maple Leaf
Half Marathon & 5K, which was begun by local restaurateur Guy
Thomas in the late 1970s and celebrated its return to the Vermont road
race calendar this year after a years-long absence.
Now organized by a
coalition of local athletic and civic organizations, their goal is to
return the Maple Leaf Half Marathon to its status as a first-class
event that
attracs large fields (formerly around 1,300 participants) and
world-class runners every
year.
The race course for the latest incarnation of the event starts and
finishes at the Manchester Parks and Recreation Center, taking runners
along Vermont's Route 7A and along scenic, rural backcountry roads, and
past Manchester Country Club.
The opening 3 miles of the race are
mostly flat with a few gentle rolling hills and a slight upwards
incline, after which miles 3 through 5 present runners with the
steepest elevation change in the race, rising about 250 feet in
elevation. From mile 5 to the finish, the race begins a long, slow
downhill punctucated by hills between miles 6 and 7 and miles 9 and 10.
