Event Details

The Lake Champlain Valley and its surrounding mountains are the setting for the late summer running of Shelburne's RaceVermont.com Half Marathon, the second of three 13.1-mile races the organization stages here in the state's northwestern corner each year from May through November. A race that offers a smaller-sized field, the RaceVermont.com Half saw just under 70 runners cross the finish line at its August 2009 running, which finishes just a stone's throw from the race starting line, near the Shelburne Town Hall.

Participants line up for the race start at the Shelburne Country Store on Falls Road, and head southward along the road through the Shelburne Falls area for the first-half loop portion of the course. This section features rolling, green farmlands, tree-lined roadways and wide-open fields, as well as a stretch past the Shelburne Airport, along Lime Kiln Road, Spear Street and Thomas Road before heading back onto Falls Road for the second half of the race.

After making their way back northward through the town center of Shelburne, runners then head westward and northward in the direction of Shelburne Farms, a 1,400-acre working farm that's also a National Historic Landmark and educational conservation center, as well as one of the area's tourist attractions. Runners stay on the running path that parallels the Farms and then head back onto the road just after crossing Bay Road, where they make their way up Harbor Road to the northernmost point of the race, which looks out over onto the waters of Shelburne Bay.

The race's last couple of miles take runners off the paved roads and onto the Shelburne Recreational Trail and the Ti Trail, a historic route that was used to transport the Ticonderoga steamboat from Lake Champlain to its current home in the Shelburne Museum in town. Runners complete the race after making their way down this mile-long stretch of trail, finishing up at Shelburne's Town Hall on Harbor Road.
