Details
Featuring a fast and largely flat course that takes runners along the
water's edge of the Dan River that cuts through this southern Virginia
town for much of the race, the Danville Half Marathon & River
City 5K are part of
the local Virginia Trust Running & Fitness Festival, which is
also sponsored by Danville Community College. Runners who've
participated in this event in the past say the race offers plenty of
scenery that's unique to this part of the country, from its historic
downtown storefronts and streets to its tree-lined country roads just
outside town.
The out-and-back race starts and finishes at the local Pepsi bottling
company building at the Crossing at the Dan facility, located at 629
Craighead Street on the southern side of the river. From there, runners
follow the first 3.1 miles of the course along the same side of the
river, sharing this first section of the course with those running the
River City 5K. After they complete the first 3.1 miles, runners then
cross over the river at the Crossing at the Dan and run the rest of
their race along the shaded and paved trails that follow along the
northern side of the Dan River, most of which is fast and flat except
for a single ramp.
Runners should expect only moderate-size field at this race, as the
2007 running of the race saw just under 300 runners cross the finish
line in both the 5K and the half-marathon combined. And while most of
the greenway along the river is paved trails for bikers, walkers and
joggers, portions of the course include some gravel and dirt surfaces.
The starting time
for both races is 8:30 AM, and those running the half marathon have
three hours to complete their race.
