Event Details

Though it's located less than an hour's drive from the white stone and concrete of downtown Washington, D.C., the challenging hills and trails of Virginia's Prince William Forest Park will make you feel like you're a very long way from the city when you tackle the 13.1 miles of the half-marathon at the EX2 Off-Road Marathon & Half Marathon. This trail race is just a few years old -- it dates back to 2005 -- but is already becoming a popular local race in the Northern Virginia/D.C. area, and organizers expect to meet their limit of 350 runners for both races at the 2008 running.

With an out-and-back loop course that those running the half-marathon run a single time and those running the full run twice, this trail race starts and finishes at the park's Goodwill Camp, and follows the park's aptly named Scenic Drive to the intersection with Burma Road, where runners turn left and head south to the trailhead for Meadows Trail. Runners then leave the road and head onto the single-track trail, which twists and turns through the next nine miles of the course, taking runners over several stream crossings and along the side of numerous streams, with all natural surface trails through the forest.

Once they make their way southward through the park along the Meadows and South Valley Trails, runners then hit the park's southeastern corner and start heading north along the North Valley Trail, running alongside the water for much of this section of the race. The course meets up once again with Burma Road in the final stretch toward the finish, taking runners again back onto Scenic Road for the finish line back at the Goodwill Camp area.

Race Weather & Climate

Located just a stone's throw from the banks of the Potomac River and the nearby Quantico Marine Corps Base, about a 40-minute frive south from Washington D.C., the Virginia city of Triangle typically experiences moderately warm to mild weather conditions in the late summer, and relatively even rainfall throughout the year. In September, average monthly temperatures range between 79°F and 61°F, while rainfall totals average around 3.96 inches for the month.
