Details
The third annual running of Norfolk's Fleet Week Half Marathon kicks
off in October 2008 along an out-and-back loop course that is mostly
fast and flat around the
streets of Norfolk's Naval Base, and takes
runners on a tour of the world’s largest Naval Base,
including views of Atlantic fleet ships like the Dwight D. Eisenhower,
Theodore Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Nitze ships, as well as
Norfolk's
Admiral’s Row, including the U.S.S. Cole Memorial and the
U.S.S. Iowa Memorial.
The race also includes a one-mile run for childen, and takes runners
past the city's Willoughby
Bay, Breezy Point Park and the waterfront along Elizabeth River and
Hampton Roads, where
the Monitor and the Merrimac clashed in their epic 1862 battle.
Organizers add that runners in the half marathon must be able to
complete the course within 3 1/2 hours, as the course will close after
that time once runners have passed the eight-mile marker.
