Event Details

Set for its third annual running in the summer of 2009, the Patrick Henry Half Marathon takes runners on a scenic route through the rolling countryside just outside Ashland, Va., in the area known as Poor Farm Park, a 254-acre park filled with forests, hiking trails, an open-air amphitheatre for concerts and enterainment, and plenty of athletic facilities including soccer fields and beach volleyball courts.

The race is part of the Richmond Road Runners Club's Grand Prix series of races, and is organized by both the club and Sports Backers, a Virginia-based sports organization that puts together a wide range of races across the state each year. From the starting and finish lines inside Poor Farm Park, runners follow Hanover County's rolling county roads through the race's 13.1 miles, which entrants must be able to complete within three hours or less, organizers note.

Perhaps known best as the home of Randolph-Macon College, Ashland is a town of about 6,000, and runners will enjoy the town's sights including a wealth of large Victorian homes, quaint residential neighborhoods and plentiful parks and trails. And history buffs among the runners will no doubt note that the race is named for the area's most famous Colonial-era hero, Patrick Henry, whose famed quote "give me liberty or give me death!" inspired America's revolutionary heroes.

Registered runners can pick up their race packets on the day of the race between 5:30 and 6:30 AM, and the race will start at 7:00 AM. The event awards ceremony follows the race starting at 10:00 AM, and the race is limited to 1,500 participants.
