Event Details

Part of a weekend of outdoor and athletic events known as the McDonald's X-Country Festival at Maymont, this event's half marathon takes runners through and around Maymont Park and the James River Park, which runs alongside the James River that cuts right through the heart of downtown Richmond. Made up of a mix of dirt roads and paved surfaces along the riverside and through parts of the city, the race offers runners plenty of scenic views of the historic 1893-era Maymont House that sits in the center of the park, which runners pass by several times along the initial stretch of the course before heading outside the park.

From there, the field follows the course as it winds through Maymont Park and William Byrd Park, passing by Shields Lake and Maymont Park Pond before heading out onto the roadway, and then runs along Blanton Road, Rugby Road and Pump House Drive. The race course follows the road all the way to the bridge at Westover Hills Boulevard, where runners turn onto the bridge and head over the James River to its southern side, where they turn onto Riverside Drive after crossing over the water.

Runners follow the twists and turns of Riverside Drive, never straying from within view of the swift-moving river to their left along the way until they get to Belle Island. The course then turns left and heads over onto the island, taking runners around the edges of the island and then onto the bridge and back over the river to Tredegar Street. There, runners turn right and run the section of the course that skirts along the river's northern banks, running past Brown Island Park on their way to the race's third bridge crossing, which they encounter at 14th Street and then run back over the river.

The last few miles of the race take the field back into the James River Park for a run again along Riverview Drive and then a fourth bridge crossing, the Highway 301-Belvidire Street bridge, which takes them back over for a brief stretch past the Hollywood Cemetery and past Clarke Springs Park. The final couple of miles run along South Harrison Street and Colorado Avenue, and then turns again on Texas and Kansas Avenue before heading back into Maymont Park for the finish.
