Details
A road race to celebrate the Oktoberfest festival in this Washington
town set in the central part of the state, the Leavenworth Marathon
& Half Marathon takes runners on a course that combines city
streets with the rolling hills of the area's scenic country roads,
within view of the Wenatchee National Forest and Alpine Lakes
Wilderness Area. The course is a 13.1-mile route (the full marathon
participants run the half course twice) that starts and finishes at
Waterfront Park near downtown, taking runners south near the
Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery and along Icicle Creek.
The terrain for the course is about 10 percent dirt trail, especially
the route along the Wenatchee River in Waterfront Park, with mostly
gently rolling hills. The race begins at about 1,100 feet above sea
level and reaches its highest point between miles 7 and 8, when the
course climbs about 200 feet in elevation. Following this peak, the
race is largely flat toward the finish.
As the race organizers themselves describe it, "you may not PR
[personal record] on this course, but it will likely be the most
beautiful and scenic marathon course you have ever run."
