The rolling hills of northern Clark County along the Lewis River serve as the setting for the second annual running of Battle Ground's North County Wine Run Half Marathon & 9K, a race that features an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at Rusty Grape Vineyard and takes runners on a loop course through the rolling farm fields and vineyards of one of the Pacific Northwest's emerging wine-growing regions.
Runners follow a loop course that takes them first east along 279th Street and then north along Northeast 182nd Avenue toward Battle Ground Lake State Park, where they make a left and run west along the southern edge of the park. This begins the big, clockwise loop section of the half marathon, which takes runners west along Northeast 10th Street, north along 142nd Avenue, east along Northeast 279th Street -- and just a stone's throw from the Lewis River that flows by -- and then south along 182nd Avenue to head back toward the park.
Once runners make their way southward along the eastern edge of Battle Ground Lake State Park, they then start covering the route they ran earlier in the first few miles of the race, this time in the opposite direction on the way back to Rusty Grape Vineyard for the race finish line. The race is limited to 1,000 runners for both races combined, and the scheduled starting times are 10:00 AM for the half marathon and 10:30 AM for the 10K.
Race Weather & Climate
Located in Washington state's southeastern corner, just over 160 miles south of Seattle and about 25 miles north of Portland, Ore., Battle Ground typically sees September temperatures that average between 46°F and 74°F, while rainfall totals average just over 2.4 inches for the month.
On the day of the race (Sept. 21), the average low is 45°F and the average high is 74°F.
