Details
Runners get a chance to trek through the rolling hills of this
southwestern Washington town that looks over onto the flowing Columbia
River at the annual Ridge Run Half Marathon & 5K, which
drew an estimated 86 runners in both races combined at its third annual
running in the fall of 2008.
The race takes participants through the rolling hills and pastoral
countryside just south of Ridgefield and
through the nearby Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, a 5,217-acre
preserve filled with river flood plain habitat areas, seasonal and
permanent wetlands, and agricultural lands.
Famous for a visit by the
Lewis and Clark expedition in 1806, the park now welcomes thousands of
visitors annual for its wildlife viewing and hiking and nature trails.
The half marathon begins at 8:00 AM at the city's Ridgefield High
School.
True to its name, the race features sections of the route that take
runners along the ridge overlooking Campbell Lake, Lake River and the
Columbia River, which marks the border between Washington State and
Oregon. The race follows an out-and-back course that turns into a loop
once runners reach the middle stretches of the race, as the route turns
off NW 209th Street and heads south along 41st Avenue, on a clockwise
route that ends up back at 209th Street. These stretches of the race
are among its most scenic, and include views of the trees and rural
farm fields as well as the waters of the lake and flowing rivers below.

Weather & Climate
Nestled in the southwestern corner of Washington, overlooking the
Columbia River and just a half-hour's drive from Portland to the south,
the town of Ridgefield typically experiences mild to moderately warm
weather in
the early fall, with average monthly temperatures that range between
77°F and 52°F in September. Rainfall is usually
occasional and
relatively light,
averaging just under 2 inches during the month.
