Event Details

Washington State's Whidbey Island is the setting for the Whidbey Island Marathon & Half Marathon, which takes place each spring on the second-longest island in the continental United States. Accessible by vehicle from the mainland (the island lies just north of Seattle in Washington's Puget Sound, Whidbey is a treasure of scenic natural beauty -- with ample views of the nearby ocean, peaceful backroads through the island's farmland areas, and the snow-capped peaks of the nearby Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges.

The course for the half marathon starts at the half-way point of the full 26.2-mile marathon, at Olympic View Elementary School on Regatta Drive & Whidbey Avenue, near the island's Oak Harbor waterfront area. From there, the point-to-point course winds through paved city streets, country roads and trails, taking runners and walkers (the race is open to both) along Bayshore Drive, through Windjammer Park, ultimately southward toward Windjammer Park on the middle portion of the island near Penn Cove.

For most of the race, the half marathon offers gently rolling hills, with the most significant changes in elevation occurring between the quarter-point and half-way point in the race (overall, the half marathon experiences a net rise of about 150 feet in elevation). One interesting note about this race: as it is sponsored by Nature's Path, the full marathon finishers who finish first for their gender will have their photo on Nature's Path Optimum brand cereal boxes distributed across North America.
