Event Details

Hill training, specifically for downhill running, is a must if you're thinking of running in the Deckers Creek Trail Half Marathon, whose 13.1 miles take participants on a course that follows a long, gradual and mostly downhill descent of roughly 800 feet from the starting line just outside Masontown, W.V., to the finish line at the riverfront in downtown Morgantown. It's a challenging mix of occasionally level and sometimes steep downhill terrain with two kinds of surfaces – packed crushed limestone trail for the race's first 10.4 miles, followed by paved city streets for the final 2.7 miles.

The race, which is part of the Morgantown Area Grand Prix Series of running, biking and multisport events, starts 13 miles up Highway 7 from the finish line at Masontown, where runners cross the starting line at 9:00 AM. From there, the race follows the Deckers Creek Trail closely along the highway, making a long, slow descent past a number of scenic overlooks and sights like the Sturgisson Chapel and Mellons Chapel.

Runners continue on along the trail all the way into Morgantown, dropping from an elevation of roughly 1,600 feet above sea level at Masontown to about 800 feet by the time they reach the finish line at Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park, which overlooks the Monongahela River that flows through downtown. Seven water and aid stops are set up along the course, and race organizers allow a three-hour time limit for participants to finish the race, closing the finish line area at 12 noon.
