Event Details

Run along the rolling hills of Calumet County in rural eastern Wisconsin, the Cheesehead Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk welcomed more than 500 runners for both races combined at the event's September 2008 running, organized by the nearby Fox Cities Pacesetters running club. The out-and-back course for the race starts and finishes in downtown Hilbert, near the Village Hearthstone Restaurant on Main Street, and follows a course that's best described as a loop through the countryside just outside town, much of which takes runners on long uphill stretches, according to runners who've finished the race in the past.

From the starting line, runners in the half -- it's open to runners only, while the 5K is open to both runners and walkers -- follow the route on a quick loop through town and then out onto Main Street, which becomes Hilbert Road. Runners then turn right onto Irish Road, which they follow south for several miles until they meet up with Ortlepp Road, where they turn left and head eastward. The course then turns again onto County Highway Y and Dreier Road before turning onto Hilbert Road, which runners follow all the way back into town for the finish on Main Street.

The course consists of paved surfaces throughout the race, and all finishers receive a "cheesehead" t-shirt and medal after they cross the finish line, provided they finish within four hours. The 5K race and the half-marathon typically attract the same number of participants, so roughly half of the entrants on race day are competing in the half-marathon and the other half in the 5K.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in eastern Wisconsin, just a few miles west of Lake Winnebago and roughly 30 miles south of Green Bay, the town of Hilbert typically sees mild to moderately cool weather in the late summer/early fall, with heavier rainfall on average than in the late fall, winter and spring. In September, average monthly temperatures range between 71°F and 49°F, while precipitation amounts average around 3.62 inches for the month.
