Nearly 300 runners crossed the finish line at the 2008 running of Green
Bay's Dick Lytie Spring Classic Half Marathon, the 28th running of the
race named in honor of the local running legend and run just as the
seasons are giving way from winter to spring. Described by both
organizers and past participants as hilly and challenging, the race
takes runners on a 13.1-mile course that starts and finishes near the
University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus on the east side of the city,
and is usually run in both cold temperatures and plenty of wind.
From the starting line at the Shorewood Golf Clubhouse, the course
takes runners along city streets through west Green Bay, along some
serious uphill and downhill stretches that will make runners think
ahead about how they're going to tackle the hills. Portions of the
course remain open to traffic during the race, and runners get a chance
to run for a stretch along the shore of Green Bay, which thanks to the
time of year the race is run, often still has ice covering much of
its surface when runners are competing in the race.
After numerous hills throughout the race, the last two miles of the
course are thankfully mostly flat, as runners head back into the
university campus for the finish. The race also includes a three-mile
race, which drew just over 100 runners in 2008.

Weather & Climate
Famous for the often brutally cold winters that visit this city of
roughly 100,000 near Wisconsin's eastern shore with Lake Michigan,
Green Bay can still experience very cold weather conditions in the
early spring. In March, average monthly temperatures range between
40°F and 23°F, while precipitation amounts average just
over 2 inches for the month.
