Wisconsin > Haunted Hustle Marathon & Half Marathon
Middleton, WI • Sunday, October 27, 2013 • Course Map
The small city that was named America's best place to live in 2007 by the editors of Money Magazine plays host to the 4th annual running of the Haunted Hustle Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K in 2013, which unfolds along a course made up of a combination of city streets, residential neighborhoods and paved and natural trails along the creek just north of downtown that feeds into Lake Mendota.
Runners are encouraged to embrace the Halloween theme of the race, as the event organizers welcome runners in costume (provided, of course, that the costumes are appropriate -- the organizers stress that the Haunted Hustle is a family-oriented event). The layout for both the full and the half marathon courses is designed also to take runners past several of Middleton's haunted sites (as legend has it, anyway!) and runners can expect "scary" sights and sounds along the way.
All the races in the event follow out-and-back courses that start and finish at Middleton's Greenway Station shopping center, where there will be a post-race Halloween bash awaiting all the finishers as well as their friends and family who come out to cheer them on.
For those running the half marathon, the course follows much of the same route as the full marathon for the race's first eight miles or so, as runners make their way eastward from Greenway Station in the direction of Lake Mendota, heading along Terrace Avenue before turning onto High Point Road and then again onto Westchester Drive. This stretch brings runners around to one of the race's first really scenic sections, the loop near Tiedemans Pond and through Woodside Heights Park, which then puts runners back out onto Kenyon Drive for some more sections through neighborhood areas.
After the runners reach about the mile 5 marker, the race course then heads away from Middleton's downtown up along Parmenter Street and toward the trails along the creek that lead to the Pheasant Branch Conservancy, a 550-acre natural area filled with marshes, natural springs, wide-open meadows and prairies as well as lowland forests and wooded, hilly areas.
The second half of the race features a very gradual uphill in to the finish, as runners make their way around the preserve and then head back onto the creekside trails for roughly another mile until they meet up with Parmenter Street once again for the final mile of the race, which brings them back into Greenway Station for the race finish.
Race Weather & Climate
Nestled along the western edge of Wisconsin's Lake Mendota, just a short drive from nearby Madison and just over 90 miles west of Milwaukee in the central southern part of the state, Middleton typically experiences much drier weather in October than in the preceding months.
In October, temperatures average between 38°F and 58°F -- on Oct. 27, the average low is 33°F and the average high is 53°F -- while rainfall totals average just over 2.4 inches for the month.
