Wisconsin > Lyndon Ellefson Memorial Half Marathon & 5K
Barron, WI • Saturday, September 22, 2012 • Course Map
Named in honor of Barron native and running enthusiast Lyndon Ellefson,
whose passing in 1998 while training in the Italian Alpine Mountains
for an upcoming marathon prompted the Barron Area Community Center to
organize the race's inaugural running the following year, the Lyndon
Ellefson Memorial Half Marathon & 5K has become a more than decade-long
tradition in this small town in Wisconsin's northwestern corner.
Home
to just over 3,000 residents, Barron offers mostly nice, flat terrain
for runners who take part in the race, as the course unfolds mostly
along rural roads through farmland just outside the town center.
From the starting line next to the Barron Medical Center Hospital on
Memorial Drive, the out-and-back course for the race follows a course
that takes runners along a course that's shaped somewhat like an
airplane. After following 14th Avenue south for a stretch and Maple
Avenue eastward for a bit, the race then takes a southward turn onto
16th Street and opens up toward the east for a long stretch along 11
1/2 Avenue, the first stretch that looks from above like the wing of a
plane.
The course then takes runners south 17th Street and westward along 10
1/2 Avenue before turning south again on 16th Street, where runners hit
the turnaround point and then head north again on 16th. The race
unfolds out for the other "wing" of the "plane" on the other side of 10
1/2 Avenue, turning northward on 15th and then heading back toward 16th
Street for the return back toward the hospital for the race finish line.
The race is run to benefit the Barron Area Community Center, which has
collected more than $300,000 in proceeds from the race over its 10
years as perhaps the local area's most popular running event. The race
starts promptly at 7:30 AM for the half marathon and 8:00 AM for the runners and walkers in the
5K.
