Event Details

The Wisconsin capital city known as the "City of Four Lakes" is the backdrop for the Madison Marathon, Half Marathon & Quarter Marathon, which saw more than 5,000 runners cross the finish line in all three races combined at the spring 2008 running of the race. The course, much of which runs through Madison's downtown, takes runners who participate in either the full or the half marathon past the waters of two of those four lakes -- Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, as well as the smaller Lake Wingra and the Monona Bay.

From the downtown starting line at Madison's Capitol Square -- where all three races start -- runners follow the half-marathon course out along King Street and then onto Williamson Street, for a straightaway stretch that lasts several blocks until the route reaches Thornton Avenue, where runners turn left and head straight for the next few blocks. The course then starts heading toward its first lakeshore stretch, passing by Tenney Park and the Tenney Park Pond on the way to Sherman Avenue and East Gotham Street, which runners follow for roughly the next nine blocks.

As runners are reaching the mile 4 marker, they turn right onto Wisconsin and then left onto Langdon Street, and follow Langdon as it curves around with the direction of the lakeshore toward the waterfront. At North Park Street, the route turns right and heads out onto the tree-lined trail along the waterfront, taking runners along the shore of the massive Lake Mendota and into the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The course skirts the lakeshore closely for roughly the next mile, all the way until reaching Walnut Street, where runners turn left and head away from the water.

Walnut Street takes the field around the edge of campus and along Breese Terrace, where runners exit the campus and head down to the next stretch of the race along Edgewood and Vilas Drive, near Edgewood College and the Henry Vilas Zoo. Runners pass by the zoo and then head across Drake Street toward Monona Bay, where runners follow the course along the edge of the bay along West Shore Drive. The course's final stretch takes runners through Quann Park, for the finish line at Madison's Alliant Energy Center on Rusk Street.
