Event Details

Just over 110 runners and walkers came out to take part in the spring 2009 running of the Prairie du Chien Half Marathon, the second annual running of this 13.1-mile road race that takes runners through the city streets and along portions of the riverfront through this often gorgeously scenic small town set on the stretch of the Mississippi River that borders Iowa in southwestern Wisconsin.

Participants get ample views of the local scenery, including the bluffs along the river, the architecture of the quaint downtown neighborhoods, and several sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

As a newer event, the Prairie du Chen race fields a relatively small group of participants, which makes for a generally more intimate and friendly feel for those running the race as well as the volunteers along the course. From the starting line on St. Feriole Island just across the water from downtown Prairie du Chien, the course follows an out-and-back loop course along the river and through the city, passing by local historic landmarks like the Villa Louis Historic Site, the Rock Building and Mulrooney Park. There are also two out-and-back stretches with turnaround points, at about the 4.5-mile and 6-mile points in the race.

The race is open to both runners and walkers, who start the event at two different times -- 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM, respectively. The course remains open for about four hours, and organizers begin shutting down the course by 11:30 AM.
