Details
Wyoming's Wind River Mountains serve as the backdrop for this
beautifully scenic running event that will celebrate its 29th annual
running on Independence Day (July 4th) in 2008. From the starting line
at Centennial Park on Main Street in the town of Lander, which lies
just in the shadow of the mountains to the west, the race follows a
course made up of gently rolling hills along the foothills of the
mountain range.
Open to both runners and walkers, the race is run along paved surfaces
throughout the race. From the start at Centennial Park, runners follow
a course that leads west along Main Street to Baldwin Creek Road, which
they take for the next 11 miles (turning onto Squaw Creek Road about
half-way into the race) back toward the finish in town. For a race that
takes place in mountainous country, runners will experience only
moderate changes in elevation, as the course has a total elevation
change of about 640 feet.
All proceeds from the race benefit the Mission of Mercy nonprofit
organization and an orphanage in Roatan, Honduras.
