Wyoming > Run With The Horses Marathon, Half Marathon
& Relay
Green River,
WY
Date
Saturday, August 23, 2008
Event
Details
Unless you're a native of the high country of southwestern Wyoming, the
Run With The Horses Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay is likely
to be one of the most challenging road race events you'll ever run. The
elevation for the marathon starting line is about 7,500 feet above sea
level and the course never descends to an altitude below about 6,100
feet. Though the half-marathon portion of the event starts well below
the full marathon elevation, it's still very much a challenge for
runners of all abilities.
The course takes runners along what is known as the Wild Horse Loop,
where wild mustang horses can often be spotted along the maintained
dirt roads that are used for the course, which takes runners
participating in the half-marathon from the starting point on Route 53
(just outside Point Butte) along the mountain ridge, passing White
Mountain and The Towers mountain on the way southward to the finish in
the town of Green River.
The field of participants for the event is usually small -- in 2006, 65
runners finished the full marathon while 22 finished the half -- but
what this race lacks in sizeable, energetic crowds it more than makes
up for in the awe-inspiring scenery along the course. In addition to
the wild horses, you'll see plenty of wide open spaces with mountains
in the background, majestic butte rock formations pointing toward the
sky, and run across bridges as you make your way into Green River for
the finish.
While the last mile or so of the race is run across paved surfaces,
most of the rest of the race is run on dirt roads in the nearby
mountains, so plan accordingly with footwear. Both the half and full
marathons start at 6:30 AM, and runners will be picked up for the
shuttle bus to the starting line at about 5:15 AM.
