Event
Details
Part of a day filled with running events that include a 5K Walk/Run, a
13.1-mile half marathon, a 26.2-mile full marathon and a 52-mile double
marathon, the Wyoming Marathon Races offers a series of hilly,
challening runs that will test the abilities of every runner thinking
of signing up. The half-marathon portion of the event, called the
Medicine Bow Half Marathon thanks to its location in Wyoming's Medicine
Bow National Forest, shares the same starting line and time as the full
and double marathons, and is run along a course made up of mostly dirt
and gravel roads.
Runners thinking of signing up for this event need to be ready for a
high-altitude run -- the elevation at the starting line, the Lincoln
Monument Rest Area (#323) on Interstate 80, is 8,700 feet above sea
level, and the course never drops to an elevation below 8,000 feet
throughout the duration of the race. After the start, the race begins a
long, gently sloping downhill stretch for the next 4.5 miles before
rising again back up
to about 8,450 feet at the turnaround point for the half-marathon.
Past participants describe the race as uniquely beautiful, with the
starting line sometimes being covered in misty mountain fog. Along the
course, runners hear the waters of mountain streams and see the
monolithic rock formations in the surrounding forests, in addition to
the Veedauwoo found throughout the course.
