End Demand Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

Saturday, October 8, 2016 • Herriman, UT • Course Map

At the End Demand Half Marathon, you’ll get to run a beautifully scenic race through the hills of Herriman, a Salt Lake Valley city along the eastern edge of the Oquirrh Mountains, which is filled with hills and where the fall colors will be on display come mid-October.

You’ll also be supporting a cause that is just beginning to get the attention it deserves in this country, the trafficking of human beings for sex and forced labor, both adults and children. This race aims to raise awareness about disrupting and stopping the demand for this trafficking, and “become a catalyst for social change” as its organizers put it.

Founded and organized by the faith-based nonprofit group Operation 61, the race has been run since 2012 and traces its roots back to a 2,700-year-old Bible verse from Isaiah, which reads “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”

A group of friends living in Utah around 2008 decided that that verse was more than just a sentence in a book; it was something that was calling them to action. Ever since then, they’ve founded and set up Operation61 as a way to stop modern-day slavery, and to raise awareness among the public about how they can help.

The problem affects millions of people around the world — as many as 27 million people live in modern-slavery around the world today, including some 300,000 children, Operation61 says. While running this race won’t bring a stop to that immediately, to be sure, it can be the catalyst that one day brings it to an end.
