Rising red canyons and stunning rock formations provide the backdrop for Moab’s The Other Half, a point-to-point half marathon run each fall in Moab, Utah. Organized for the first time in 2004 as a fall companion to the popular spring Canyonlands Half Marathon, The Other Half has grown into a popular event in its own right, drawing more than 1,100 runners at its fall 2014 running.
The race starts just outside of Moab, at the historic Dewey Bridge near milepost 30 of Highway 128, and follows the highway as it parallels the Colorado River down to the Sorrell River Ranch Resort. The course is run entirely on paved roads and features gorgeous views of the surrounding terrain, including prominent landmarks Fisher Towers, Castle Rock, and the La Sal Mountains.
Starting at an elevation of 4100 ft, the first seven miles of the course feature gentle rolling hills and a gradual incline. At mile 8, the gradual incline turns into a steep half-mile climb to a high point of 4300 ft, followed by a fast half-mile descent.
Miles 9-12 have a few short rolling hills and mile 13 is a fast downhill to the finish at Sorrell River Ranch Resort. Post-race refreshments include beer from the Moab Brewery, one of Utah’s outstanding microbreweries.
After the race, take a sunset drive through the nearby Arches National Park to experience breathtaking views of the natural sandstone arches and unusual rock formations. A one-mile uphill hike is worth the effort to get an up-close look at one of Utah’s most famous icons, the spectacular Delicate Arch.
The spectacular scenery along the course may look familiar to movie buffs — the area is a favorite of Hollywood, as Mission Impossible, Austin Powers, and Breakdown are just a few of the movies that have used the backdrop through which The Other Half is run.
The scheduled starting time for the race is 8:30 AM local time (Mountain Time), and there is no parking available for participants at the starting line, which means that all runners will need to take the race-provided shuttle from Moab to the starting line in Dewey. These shuttles begin leaving Moab at 6:30 AM — please visit the race website for more details on where to catch the shuttle to the start.
Walkers may participate, as long as they can cross the finish line within the race’s 3 1/2 hour course time limit — after then, support on the course for participants will no longer be available.
