Open to both runners and walkers, this year’s Bellingham Bay Marathon, Half-Marathon & 5K promises to be a beautifully scenic race along the city’s waterfront, as the event takes participants on an out-and-back loop course southward from the Hotel Bellwether along the shores of the Bay, and back again to the hotel for the finish.
Starting around sea level and flat for the first three miles, the race becomes hilly around miles 4 and 5, after which the course reaches its lowest point — near sea level — around miles 8 and 9, and then again as runners near the mile 11 marker.
Run mostly along paved surfaces, the race also takes runners along city running and walking trails and features views of the nearby San Juan Islands and Mount Baker. Outdoor activity is a favorite pastime for residents across the city, whose natural beauty and topography accommodates running, hiking, paddling, canoeing, and cycling in all seasons.
The half marathon is open to a maximum of 2,100 entrants, so runners who are thinking of taking part in the race are encouraged to sign up early. There’s a 4 1/2 hour course time limit for the half marathon, which is USATF (USA Track & Field) certified.
