Entering its 10th year in partnership with Jacksonville State University, the Little River Canyon Half Marathon and 1k Sprint for Kids is a paved road looping course, often argued as one of the most scenic half marathons in the state, let alone the country!
The Little River Canyon Half Marathon offers runners a scenic yet sometimes challenging event comprising canyon-like hills and valleys, winding roads, and rolling farm country terrain that you can only be so lucky to experience in Fort Payne, Alabama.
As for the most notable landmark of the race, runners will run directly through the famous Angus cattle ranch where they can wave hello and so-long to its Tennessee River Music Hereford; Not sure what Hereford is? Just keep an eye out for a Hurd of content and curious red and white beef cattle…
Starting at 8:00 a.m. sharp, this race kicks off (and finishes) at Little River Canyon Center and follows the Little River Canyon National Preserve for the first 5 miles or so. Once runners get through the initial rim of the canyon, they’ll embark through gentle farmland for the remainder of the race where it’s largely flat pavement.
At miles 6 and 8 upon leaving an obscure but beautifully interesting natural landmark known as Mushroom Rock, you can expect to be greeted by a couple of special guests to cheer you on, however, we’ll leave that a surprise…
The final leg of the race will be spent journeying off the National Preserve on your way back toward Little River Canyon Center, the finish line.
Once you cross the finish line, runners can expect a finisher’s medal, and of course, some celebratory post-race food that’s known to be quite the gob-smacker. As a smaller non-broadcasted race, the Little River Canyon Center is one of community, so enjoy it!
