Saturday, August 14, 2021 • Flagstaff, AZ • Course Map
An annual race that is part of the Flagstaff Summer Running Series and benefits the local Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Flagstaff, the Dave McKay Memorial Half Marathon offers a hilly, challenging 13.1 miles along a combination of paved city streets, dirt roads and single-track mountain trails.
The half-marathon and 5K, both of which start and finish at Wheeler Park in downtown Flagstaff, take runners into nearby Thorpe Park and are open to both runners and walkers.
Runners considering this race need to be ready for high altitudes — the race course lies at an elevation of about 7,000 feet above sea level, and the course takes runners into the hilly mountain areas just outside the city in Thorpe Park, up to Observatory Mesa and along the Flagstaff Urban Trail system.
Several hundred runners cross the finish line in both races combined each year, and the race also hosts a Kids’ Dash race from Wheeler Park to Thorpe Park.
The race is now named the Dave McKay Memorial Half Marathon, in honor of the man who founded Big Brothers, Big Sisters back in 1967.
