Register early for the Black Toenail Friday Half Marathon & 7.5 Miler—this popular autumn tradition often sells out, organizers warn. It’s a lot more fun than spending the day at the mall!
You’ll burn off your Thanksgiving indulgences without having to hustle to the starting line. The generous 11:00 AM start time for both races allows you to take your holiday weekend slow.
Both races are run on the well-groomed trails of Proud Lake State Recreation Area. The half marathon course is composed of two loops. (Those running the 7.5 Miler will break off before the second loop to race back to the finish line.)
The half marathon course features less than 300 feet of elevation change throughout the event, offering runners all the beauty of a trail race without grueling climbs. Expect ample course support, as well, with four water stops that runners will loop by twice, for a total of 8 opportunities for water, Gatorade, and gels.
Both races have a 2:30 PM cut off time, which means half marathoners must finish in at least 3 ½ hours. “If a half marathoner has fallen far off-pace by the second lap, they may be pulled off the course,” warn event staff.

Take Note
The race begins at the RV Campground area within the park—not near the entrance! As the event is held at a state park, there is a small admission fee required to enter. (If you already have a State Park Passport, you will not need to pay this fee.)
Race Weather & Climate
November weather in Commerce, Michigan, takes a turn for the cold. Conditions may be cool and pleasant for running, but as the season rolls toward the winter, some rain (or even snow!) is possible late in the month. Average temperatures range from 47°F to 33°F.
